Gloria Molina is a trailblazer in United States politics and the first Latina to ever serve in the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Born in Los Angeles, California, Gloria Molina is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and is the oldest of five siblings. She attended California State University, Los Angeles where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In addition, she attended the University of Southern California where she earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
Molina began her political career in 1981 when she was elected to the California State Assembly, becoming the first Latina to ever serve in the California Legislature. During her time in the Assembly, she served on the transportation, finance, and health committees. She was also a strong advocate for the rights of women and children.
In 1991, Molina was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and has served as the chairperson since her election. As the first Latina to ever be elected to the Board of Supervisors, Molina has fought to improve the lives of Latinos in Los Angeles County. She is a strong advocate for immigration reform, health care reform, and other issues important to the Latino community.
Throughout her career, Molina has been a champion for the rights of women, children, and immigrants. She has received numerous awards for her work in the community, including being named one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics” in 2009 by Hispanic Business Magazine. She has also received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her efforts to promote immigration reform.
